Style Secrets

We’ve asked some of our ‘top shops’ for their style secrets when they are looking after their brides. What is it that really matters? Read on below and see what they suggest and if any of their top tips can help you find the dress that is ‘The One’

Brides should always focus on themselves first ie: choosing their dress style and shape, colour etc. Once this decision is made choosing bridesmaid dresses becomes much easier.

Always ring ahead when you know you want to try on wedding dresses to avoid disappointment. A lot of bridal boutiques work on an appointment basis so that there is an experienced member of staff available to help guide you through the collections. Their help is often invaluable as they should be knowledgeable about their dresses and what suits particular body shapes. Also, it should help to avoid the shop being overcrowded and making it a nicer experience for everyone!

If you are going to lose weight try and do it before you go dress shopping - you will feel much better in a dress that fits. But remember that if you lose or gain weight after you have ordered your dress and it doesn't fit (and may never fit!) then neither the manufacturer, or the shop are at fault.

Kirsty & Melanie from La Belle Angele, Norwich

DO go to your appointment with an open mind, try on a bit of everything - and listen to the advice and guidance given to you by your consultant - she's not a shop assistant - she's a trained consultant who will help you find the right shade and style to flatter you.

We always ask our brides if they have a budget that they would like us to keep within when helping them look through the dresses. This has been really useful as it means that we can be more concise and narrow the search down so that girls don’t feel like they are wasting their time. If the shop you visit doesn’t ask you, we would recommend that you tell them especially if you are working within a tight budget. Also, it prevents the horror of falling in love with a dress that it £1000 more than you expected to spend – don’t worry nobody worth their reputation will judge you in anyway.

Lucy Ball from The Wedding Shop, Alderley Edge, Cheshire

The trying and buying of a wedding gown is a once in a lifetime experience.. make sure you like and trust the person selling you your gown... you should feel like the only bride on the books!!!

Huw Rees from Huw Rees, Llandeilo

When you have your bridal consultation, try on different dresses to see what style, shape colour fabric suit you best, however, try not to try on too many as this can often leave you confused, and what should be a very happy time choosing your dress, can then turn into a stressful time.

Judy from London Bride, London

We find that brides have a happier experience if they only bring one or two people with them to their first trying-on session. Sometimes, although bringing five bridesmaids and several family members might seem appealing, when they are all fighting for space on the sofa (and to share their opinions) it can be quite stressful for an already emotional bride. As long as the chosen ones know you very well, and are there for you, they will be a great judging panel.

Lucy Ball from The Wedding Shop, Alderley Edge, Cheshire

Be vocal about what you do and don't like about a dress when trying it on. That way the assistant can suggest alternative dresses to try on.

Emma & Jenny from The Bridal House LLP, Aylesbury

Don’t get too hung up on sizes, we as retailers will guide you in conjunction to the manufacturers size chart. Bridal sizes do NOT reflect high street sizes, your guests will not see the size label; just admire a beautifully fitted gown.

Julie Moody & Sharon Pearce from Harmony Brides, Swindon, Wiltshire

Always start with good foundation garments - the right bra can make all the difference in your pictures and how you feel throughout the day. Foundation garments should be chosen in a shade closest to your skin tone.

If you're shopping for a strapless gown, make sure you bring a strapless bra to use while trying on. It will help give you a better idea of what the gown would look like.

This is the one time when you can give a personal statement about your individual style, so enjoy!

Judy from London Bride, London

Rather than lose weight looking at gowns, try on some styles and surprise yourself...

Huw Rees from Huw Rees, Llandeilo

The fabric of your gown needs to be one of the factors in making it ‘the one’. Lightweight fabrics like chiffon are the best choice for warm-weather weddings. If your nuptials will be in wintry-weather consider heavier fabrics.

DO consider your fiancee - what would he like to see you walk down the aisle in?

Laura Daly & the girls at Bellissima Weddings, Chelmsford, Essex

Where possible see your gown in daylight as the colour will change - we often take brides outside the shop

Kirsty & Melanie from La Belle Angele, Norwich

Ask the opinion of the shop owner/assistant. If you don’t trust their judgment you are in the wrong shop!!

Huw Rees from Huw Rees, Llandeilo

Whatever you do, enjoy the experience. The assistants are there to help you and should be approachable and welcoming. If you have a good feeling about the shop you’ll hopefully enjoy every moment form start to finish, which can be anything from 2 years to 2 months…

Lucy Ball from The Wedding Shop, Alderley Edge, Cheshire

Take the advice of a person whose judgment you trust.... taking 6 friends with differing opinions is not the best way to choose the perfect gown.

Huw Rees from Huw Rees, Llandeilo

Try to limit your visits to no more than about 3 shops - or you risk getting ‘white out'.

Laura Daly & the girls at Bellissima Weddings, Chelmsford, Essex

Definitely try a veil with your gown... even if you are adamant you don't want one. This often finishes the look for a bride.

Emma & Jenny from The Bridal House LLP, Aylesbury

A laced or corset backed dress is only as good as the person who laces you into it.

Kirsty & Melanie from La Belle Angele, Norwich

Bring the person who will be dressing you on the Big Day to your Final Fitting to ensure they understand how to dress you.

Paul & Brenda from Brenda Lorraine Bridal Wear Romford, Essex

Where possible buy your Accessories at the same place as your Bridal Gown, to ensure they match & compliment each other.

Find out how much the shop charges for alterations. We have heard of several places charging in excess of £500 which is either charged up front, or worse, a nasty surprise at the end. When you’ve spoken to a few people you’ll get to know what the typical rate in your area is.

Lucy Ball from The Wedding Shop, Alderley Edge, Cheshire

When your dress arrives in the shop it can be quite nice time to book another appointment to look at accessories before your fittings. When fittings take place there can be limited time and shopping opportunities like this should never be rushed, also, it is a nice excuse to wear your dress again.

Lucy Ball from The Wedding Shop, Alderley Edge, Cheshire

Don't arrive in a rush for your dress fitting – your fitting should be a relaxed occasion. And don’t wear too much make-up because you’ll only risk damaging or soiling your dress.

Don't expect to cry when you find your dress - if you're not the overly emotional type - you'll take it all in your stride- a big grin and a sigh of relief is just as good!!

Laura Daly & the girls at Bellissima Weddings, Chelmsford, Essex

DO Remember that bridal gowns take a while to order and make , so allow plenty of time for this - 6 - 8 months before your wedding is an ideal time to place your order, as once the dress arrives it will most likely have to be fitted to you.

Laura Daly & the girls at Bellissima Weddings, Chelmsford, Essex

In our "do it yourself" world, you may be surprised by the high level of attention and care you will receive when shopping at a full-service bridal salon. Enjoy it! This is an important purchase and it should feel like it.

Internet Bridal purchases are a risk. Retailers cannot be held responsible for ‘Designer copy’ gowns, that don’t arrive in the same standard as you tried on within the authorised bridal retailers premises.

Julie Moody & Sharon Pearce from Harmony Brides, Swindo, Wiltshire

It is important to find a gown that reflects your personality....You wear the gown... don’t let the gown drown you…

Huw Rees from Huw Rees, Llandeilo

Last of all ENJOY IT!
